The Nicole Sherburne Quartet Presents: Shoe-Gaze Noirscapes

The project started almost by accident, when free avant-garde drummer Adam Smith called Nicole & Jason Branscum (trombone) to the studio to collectively live-compose over a marathon late-night free drumming session. The trio was happy with the resulting album, Different Seasons (still unreleased), and decided to book a local club appearance to celebrate, including double-bassist Phil Maneri on the set.

The chemistry was instant—Spontaneous shoe-gaze jazz poured off the stage with the tidal arc of a long-married older couple, tenderly and slowly making love. The quartet's collective live-composition was thoughtful and sensitive, traversing a wide range from ambient and suspenseful to occasional full-out cacophony. The sound can best be described as an emotional B-movie noir soundtrack, or sound sculpture.

Experience

Audiences throughout the United States are entranced by Nicole Sherburne's magnetic saxophone sound. Nicole strives for huge tone, looking to Stanley Turrentine, Wayne Shorter, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Clarence Clemons, & Pharoah Sanders as her role models.

Nicole's upcoming spiritual jazz release Auriculum features three regulars in the Columbus, OH, jazz scene--Adam Smith, Jason Branscum, & Phil Maneri. The 114-minute journey is entirely improvised from start to finish. With no game plans, keys, or melodies chosen, each musician communicates and reacts to each other in real-time, creating a work of art that is spontaneous and unexpected. Although many free jazz albums are cacophonous, Nicole's jazz quartet tends toward meditative playing, using great restraint to collectively sculpt an introspective work of art.

Nicole currently plays for the fabulous Johnson Brothers. She has shared the stage with Foley, Lisa Bella Donna, Travis Bowlin, Urban Jazz Coalition, George Clinton, Garry Shider, Reese Wynans, Ken Navarro & Hank Marr.
