Julia Barrett
My art tackles themes of bigotry, xenophobia, racism, sexism, rape culture, & anxiety through eclectic sensual figurative art. It juxtaposes reality and idealization. Although I work in a mixture of mediums, (sculpture, digital art, mixed media, tattooing, and street art) my main concentration is oil paint. My body of work stems from a repetitive question of self-identity vs. societal idealism.
The pieces I make, associate mostly with gender identity and the stereotypes that go along with being a woman; but also, speaks to gender expression, sexual orientation, and mental well-being. I use wood, glue, canvas, paint, needle, thread, pen, tablet, and much more to ask what the boundaries are for what is acceptable and unacceptable as a woman (or as a person in general) in society.
All in all, I fit into that stereotypical “woman artist=feminist artist”; however, I am always pushing the boundaries of what is seen as “inappropriate” to show--topics that aren’t openly talked about in our society, art that is dark, pieces that are disturbing. By walking into the environments I create or seeing the art I make, the viewer is challenged to normalize the abnormal, and question societal standards.
