10 Events + Holiday Shopping Ideas This Week

I don’t know about you, but I’m loving this fall weather. It seriously energizes me. This is the time of year when I really want to get out and do things. So I’m searching the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com to plan some arts activities this weekend. Here’s what I’ve found:

The Central Ohio Hot Jazz Society hosts its monthly Hot Jazz Jam & Dance at the Rambling House this Wednesday, Nov. 10. They offer the energetic event with dancing and live music the second Wednesday of every month.

My alma mater, the Ohio State Department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts, presents its next production – Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room – Nov. 10-19.

The National Veterans Memorial & Museum is offering free admission to all veterans on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11.

The Columbus Jewish Film Festival continues this week through Tuesday, Nov. 16, with a variety of films available to view virtually or in-person at the Jewish Community Center.

On Thursday, Nov. 11, the Lincoln Theatre hosts a showcase of choirs from two historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

The Columbus Museum of Art opens a big exhibition featuring work by Vincent van Gogh and many of his inspirations – Through Vincent’s Eyes: Van Gogh and His Sources – on Friday, Nov. 12. I love Van Gogh’s work, so I can’t wait to bring the family to this one.

This Friday, Nov. 12 is Franklinton Fridays! This is one of my favorite local arts events: live music, gallery openings, studio tours, local spots for food and drink.

Head to the Ohio Theatre to see the Columbus Symphony perform Variations on Romanticism, featuring pianist Claire Huangci, this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13.

Chamber Music Columbus hosts the nationally acclaimed Aizuri Quartet at the Southern Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Also on Nov. 13, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum opens two exhibitions, both of which run through May 2022 – Power Lines: Comics and the Environment and Dark Laughter Revisited: The Life and Times of Ollie Harrington.

If you’re thinking about holiday shopping already, there are more and more local options cropping up:

  • The Clintonville Arts Guild hosts its annual holiday show and sale this weekend, Nov. 12-14, at the Whetstone Community Center.
  • Last weekend, Ohio Designer Craftsmen opened its annual Gifts of the Craftsmen holiday exhibition and sale. It’s a perfect chance to see beautifully crafted work by more than 125 artists and purchase holiday gifts.
  • 3060 Gallery launches its holiday artisan market this Friday, Nov. 12, and offers it every Friday and Saturday through the end of the year.

Chamber Music Columbus, Jewish Community Center, Franklinton Arts District and National Veterans Memorial and Museum all receive Project Support grants from the Arts Council.
