10 ways to get the most out of a short weekend

Can we discuss how much I HATE daylight savings time? Ok, I won’t go into it, but suffice it to say that we are losing an hour this weekend, which makes the hours we have more precious. With this in mind I headed to ColumbusMakesArt.com’s event calendar to find all of the ways I can get the most out of my weekend. Here’s what called out to me:

There are a few virtual events wrapping up their run on Thursday, March 11:

WinterFEST: Vadim & Friends presented by ProMusica and DANCE@30FPS a film series from The Ohio State University’s dance department and the Wexner Center for the Arts.

And, there is a virtual event kicking off this week: Brian Harnetty is back at the Wex with Shawnee, Ohio, which is available through March 16.

In other virtual event news: check out this online lecture, presented by The Ohio State University Libraries, with Aleksandar Zograf talking about his comics and his visits to flea markets for inspiration.

Some galleries, to keep us safe indoors while the U.S. works on getting folks vaccinated against COVID-19, have set up by-appointment viewing. This includes the Greater Columbus Arts Council and our current exhibition showcasing photography and films from the winners of our Art Unites Cbus Photography & Film Awards last year.

A few other by-appointment exhibitions to check out include:

Blockfort presents Lasting Legacies, which features artwork that represents historic women and is created by Columbus-based artists. Some artists that I know and love have work in this show and I’m excited to check it out (by April 3)—and grateful for a chance to do so in a way that feels pandemic-safe.

This week, the Dublin Arts Council launches Lightning Sprites, an exhibition of six solar-powered, kinetic sculptures by Columbus-based artist Matthew Mohr. Right now you can make an appointment to see these works in the gallery space, but keep an eye on this show. While there aren’t dates set yet, the plan is to move these works outdoors and create a fun interactive quest to find them.

This Friday, March 13, is Franklinton Fridays. As always that means a chance to enjoy a lot of art in one stop—including a new exhibition at ROY G BIV gallery featuring Benedict Scheuer and Noah Kashiani.

Finally, on Friday, Franklin Park Conservatory brings back Chihuly Nights, which I personally think is kind of a perfect date night outing.

We lose an hour, which means you don’t have to cook or clean this weekend. Just go out and enjoy the arts!

Lacey Luce is a digital marketing specialist for the Greater Columbus Arts Council who is impatiently waiting for her vaccination.
