Ah the sights, sounds and feels that come with the arts. But, Columbus has so much to offer that it can get a bit overwhelming trying to pick an experience. To help out I’ve created a short list of events to excite your senses this weekend. While I recommend all of these events, may I suggest that you choose one that is happening at a place that is new to you? Just for the fun of it.
Several places have new exhibitions going up:
- Columbus College of Art & Design is opening two new exhibition on Thursday, Nov. 18. i know it’s the end & i am full of beauty, features work by Brezaja Huthcheson & Maria Joranko utilizing video, sculpture and photography to explore queerness through landscape. Land features work by CCAD alumni, Kurt Lightner, Bing Lee, Erin Mckenna, Kate Rhoades and Ed Valentine, who represent different times in the college’s history. There is an opening reception, 5-7 p.m., Nov. 18 at Beeler Gallery.
- Friday, Nov, 19, The Columbus Culture Arts Center opens Out of Tunes, an exhibition of mixed-media sculpture made by artist Brian Riegel from reclaimed musical instruments.
- If you like a little exposition with your exhibition, might I suggest heading over to the Columbus Museum of Art Saturday, Nov. 20. The museum is presenting one of several events supporting their latest exhibition, Through Vincent’s Eye’s: Van Gogh and His Sources. This will be a talk between two curators about the art of Van Gogh and the artists who influenced him. I checked out the exhibition briefly during the members preview and definitely need to go back several times to really take in the breadth of work on exhibit, it is extraordinary. I love talks like this because they offer insight and stories around the work that you are seeing.
This weekend includes two dance and one opera performance:
- Opera Project Columbus presents To See Again the Stars, Nov. 19 & Nov.21, at the Lincoln Theatre.
- OYO Dance Company presents One Light, Nov. 19-21 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center.
- Hixon Dance presents City Dance Show Case III: A Contemporary Choreography Showcase at Columbus Dance Theatre’s Fisher Theater, Nov. 19-21.
Yes there is always film available, but here are two options that are not at your average multiplex.
- Reelabilities Film Festival Presents: An Evening of Short Films, free and available online Nov. 17-21.
- Friday, Nov. 19, The McConnell Arts Center continues its Exhibition on Screen series with Cezanne Portraits of a Life, which was filmed on location at the National Portrait Gallery, London, the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC and Musee d’Orsay, Paris.
If you are a person who is ready for the holiday season to start—NOW—then you are in luck.
- On Saturday, Nov. 20 Franklin Park Conservatory opens their Conservatory Aglow and Holiday Blooms exhibitions.
- And you can start that holiday shopping at Front Street Flea, Saturday, Nov. 20, which includes crafters and artisans as well as re-sellers.
- Finally, it is the last chance to catch Red Herring’s hilarious production of the thanksgiving play. Last show is Sunday, Nov. 21.
These are my picks for fun this weekend, but you can curate your own list at ColumbusMakesArt.com.
