13 lucky passport stops this weekend

We are just over the half way mark for the Columbus Makes Art Passport program. The bad news is that some of the events in the passport have wrapped up. The good news is that there are still plenty of things to do to earn some cool prizes—even if you are just starting your passport journey now.

This weekend there are some stellar events happening that will also get you a stamp (sticker) in your passport—on Thursday alone, there are no less than three plays opening.

The Short North Stage opens Young Frankenstein Thursday, Oct. 7. This a musical adaptation of the wildly funny Mel Brooks movie of the same name—as I sit here writing this, a dozen quotes from the movie are popping into my head. It’s a must-see. Pro tip: Hubbard Grille is in easy walking distance from the Garden Theatre and they are offering passport holders $10 off a $40 food purchase.

Red Herring Theater Company opens These Shining Lives, an inspiring story of four women who exposed the deadly working conditions at the Radium Dial Company.

And, Evolution Theater Company opens The Story of My Life in the Abbey Theater of Dublin.

Thursday is also the CAPA’s Napoleon Dynamite event, which includes a screening of the cult classic movie followed by a discussion with cast members, Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez and Jon Gries.

Friday, Oct. 8, the Cultural Arts Center opens Art and Jazz. Visual artist Karin Dahl and composers Chris Berg, Brian Cashwell and Michael Cox explore how art and music combine to enhance meaning.

The October Franklinton Fridays event is Oct. 8 (this is the last Franklinton Fridays for getting passport stamps). There are four passport stops: ROY G BIV Gallery, which is opening a new show of work by Mychaelyn Michalec, Wild Goose Creative, Glass Axis, which is kicking off its annual Pumpkin Patch Glass Art Sale; and 400 Square (representing 400 W. Rich and Chromedge and stamping inside Strongwater Food & Spirits).

Pro Tip: Passport holders get 10% off of food from Yellow Brick Pizza. I went last FF and had the Chicago Style pizza. So good. I’m still full.

Also, fun fact: Strongwater donated coupons for a free appetizer for prizes—so when you are ready to redeem your passport, be sure to grab one while they last.

Saturday, Oct. 9 Columbus Gay Men’s Chorus presents Vox Across the Pond—yup, that’s right, it’s a British invasion bringing you everything from The Who to Adele.

There are two chances to visit Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative to see demos (and get your passport stamped) this week: Wednesday, Oct. 6 and Saturday Oct. 9.

Saturday is also Moonlight Market (the last one for 2021) on Gay Street—arts vendors, music, food—basically a good time in the heart of downtown. AND, pro tip: Due Amici is offering 20% off of food for passport holders.

And finally, It’s the last chance to see SHIFT at the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery. The exhibition closes Oct. 8 and there is a creative writing workshop with 2020 Ohio Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymore on Oct. 7.

So, there you have it. Twelve stops where you can get your passport stamped in less than a week. And, BTW there are currently 49 unique prizes (807 total) that can be claimed with 12 stamps or less.

Of course there is a lot more going on in the arts then you’ll find in the passport. Create your own adventure by searching ColumbusMakesArt.com/Events.
