Weekend Warriors

8 New Arts Events + 6 Ending This Week

I spent this past weekend on a Cub Scout campout with my oldest. It was wonderful to be immersed in nature with this beautiful autumn weather, although once the sun went down it was a cool 36 degrees out.

I’m excited for more adventures this weekend, so I searched the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com and discovered eight new events and six wrapping up!

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, ReelAbilities Film Festival presents an evening of five short films, written and directed by students from the Bridgeway Academy. The following night, Oct. 17, they present the film Mind Over Matter, about a young man with cerebral palsy becoming a rock musician.

Evolution Theater Company premieres The Turkey Men, a new play by Columbus playwright Douglas Whaley. It opens Oct. 16 and runs through Oct. 26.

Thursday, Oct. 17 is the next Backstage at the Lincoln Theatre series, featuring jazz from Daniel Goins and Friends. Tickets are only $10!

That same night, Columbus Children’s Theatre and Short North Stage open their co-production of West Side Story. It runs from Oct. 17 through Nov. 17. That show is near and dear to my heart: it was the first production I was ever in, back in sophomore year of high school. I was a Shark, and I had six lines, and I danced with a junior who didn’t like me.

Last weekend, Open Door Art Studio opened a new exhibition of creepy crawly creations called Are You Afraid of the Art? It should be a fun and clever show, and it’s free!

On Friday, Oct. 18, Sara Abou Rashed will be performing her show A Map of Myself at the Lincoln Theatre. We saw it last year, and it’s a remarkable piece about her life in Syria and coming to the U.S. Be sure to grab this opportunity to see her – and it’s free!

On Saturday, Oct. 19, Chamber Music Columbus hosts an evening with three musicians – David Finckel, Wu Han and Philip Setzer – at the Southern Theatre.

These are the final days for a lot of events, like My [Creative] Space at the Main Library’s Carnegie Gallery; Natural Expressions at the Riffe Gallery; Yani Sheng: Netsuke Dreams and the Student Show at the McConnell Arts Center; and Front Line and Drawing Blood at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library.

Get out and explore the arts this weekend, and spread the word on social media. Be sure to tag your finds – from public art to exhibitions to concerts to theater – with #artmakescbus!
