Happy Wednesday! I hope you were able to enjoy the Labor Day weekend. We said our informal good-bye to summer with family time, swimming in the pool, grilling and rides on my in-laws’ boat. It was loads of fun, but I’m eager to be back into the swing of things. I’m checking the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com to plan our weekend already:
- This week the Ohio Art League opened its 2023 Fall Juried Exhibition at the Schumacher Gallery at Capital University. The free display will be up through early December.
- Tonight – Wednesday, Sept. 6 – the Wexner Center features a collection of short films by Palestinian women titled My Eye Has No Iris.
- The ReelAbilities Film Festival also celebrates its kick-off tonight at Columbus State with short children’s films, a feature film, artist talk-back and character design workshop with Bryan Moss.
- On Thursday, Sept. 7, the VIVO Music Festival presents Beer and Beethoven at Natalie’s. Then on Saturday, Sept. 9 it teams up with Chamber Music Columbus to host Virtuosity at the Southern Theatre.
- Speak Easy live storytelling night returns on Thursday to Wild Goose Creative.
- Thursday night is also the opening reception for the latest exhibition in CCAD’s Beeler Gallery, Wake… Sleep… Dream. This free show of women artists working in high education will be on view through Nov. 18.
- If you’re in the mood for theater, two productions open on Sept. 7: The Inheritance Part 1 from Evolution Theatre Co. and Thunder & Lightning at Shadowbox Live.
- This Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8 and 9, is 934Fest! It’s two days of music, live mural painting and much more fun.
- Franklinton Fridays also lands this Friday night. Stroll the district and catch the opening of the Origins exhibition at Wild Goose.
- On Saturday, Sept. 9, you can see a free dance performance, Konnection & Kulture, at Madlab Theatre.
- If you’re downtown that night, head over the Gay and High streets for Tapestry, a celebration underneath Janet Echelman’s Current, featuring live music, fashion and visual art.
There’s plenty of live music this week, too!
- Every Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Easton hosts live music at The Yard. This week it’s The Whirlybirds!
- On Friday, Sept. 8, Six String Concerts hosts Carrie Newcomer and special guests at the King Arts Complex.
- That night the New Albany Symphony Orchestra celebrates the career of Judy Garland.
- Maya Mougey plays Rambling House on Saturday, Sept. 9. (Fun fact: Maya was one of the first Columbus Makes Art featured artists! It's great to see her still performing today.)
- The next Sundays at Scioto concert in Dublin lands this Sunday, Sept. 10 with Popgun.
- That day Music at St. Mary presents Orlay Alonso and Anabella Petronsi at Timashev Recital Hall.
