It makes me so proud to see Columbus artists and arts organizations still keeping so busy these days. Looking over the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com for this week, I’m amazed again at everything that’s going on: a virtual festival, online and in-person concerts and poetry nights, artist talks, a gallery opening, streaming film. Here are a few highlights:
- Normally this would be the week of Festival Latino, with music and dance and delicious food lining the riverfront. In lieu of that, CAPA has converted it into Viva Festival Latino!, a full week of online programming through their Facebook page. Tune in every day through Sunday, Aug. 9 for cultural events and activities.
- The Thurber House hosts their next online literary picnic with mystery writer Kristen Lepionka tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 5.
- CAPA’s Together ApART virtual concert series continues this week, with Joe Peppercorn (Thursday), Stephanie Jeffreys (Friday) and Amber Knicole (Saturday) performing.
- This Friday, Aug. 7, 934 Gallery hosts both a virtual and in-person reception for their newest exhibition: Attractive Nuisances by Holly Wilson. If you want to view it IRL, you can schedule a viewing between 7-10 p.m.
- The Wexner Center wraps up some great streaming films and series this week: Cincinnati Goddamn and Ai Weiwei: Yours Truly (wrapping up Thursday, Aug. 6) and the 2020 Sundance Film Festival shorts (through Saturday, Aug. 8).
- This week the Wex is also hosting an online Q&A and concert with Dr. E. as part of its Wex EP series.
- If you feel comfortable with seeing live music in-person, Natalie’s Grandview continues to host shows. See Bobby Floyd (Wednesday, Aug. 5), FLIPPO’s tribute to Joni Mitchell (Saturday, Aug. 8) and Oh Freedom! Songs and Voices of Freedom and Civil Rights (Sunday, Aug. 9).
Stay safe, friends! Be kind, wear a mask, support small businesses around you.
