We’re still a couple weeks away from our boys starting school, but I know other school districts are headed back this week. Pretty much everyone is going virtual, at least for the start of the year. To help establish school hours at home, we’re dedicating a corner of our family room: a shared desk, some bookshelves, a laptop.
Since we’ll have more time with them at home, we’re looking for ways to supplement their learning, and you better believe I’m searching the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com for arts experiences! Here’s what I discovered for this weekend:
- The Thurber House hosts a virtual discussion with author Robert Gipe tonight at 6:30 p.m. They’ve done a great job converting their Summer Literary Picnic series online.
- Last weekend ROY G BIV opened a new exhibition in their gallery titled Refresh, Refresh, Refresh, featuring the work of Christine Gaffney and Leah Trzndanel. (You can get to know the artists more in this feature on Columbus Underground.)
- Hammond Harkins Galleries wraps up two exhibitions this week: Melissa Vogley Woods’ in-person show out of the blue and the virtual show #fromthestudio.
- Studios on High Gallery is running an interesting-looking in-person exhibition titled Narratives, by Jennifer Jolley Brown. She creates little stories using printmaking and ceramics.
- There’s always more streaming film from the Wexner Center: River City Drumbeat, Represent Hillary Bachelder, Change of Life.
- The Hilliard Arts Council hosts outdoor concerts on the lawn of the Hilliard Civic and Cultural Art Center. This Sunday, Aug. 23 is a night of Songs of Inspiration, Hope and Freedom from Broadway.
- And Natalie’s again features a stellar lineup of shows this week! Angela Perley plays two concerts at Grandview: one on Thursday, Aug. 20 and one on Friday, Aug. 21. Gabrielle Solange performs at Worthington on Friday, Aug. 21, the Urban Jazz Coalition plays at Grandview on Saturday the 22nd and Peter Noone (of Herman’s Hermits fame) performs two shows at Grandview on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Good luck to all the teachers and students going back this week!
