Weekend Warriors

Exhibitions, Improv, Music Fests and More This Weekend

Now we’re full-tilt into February, and I’m looking for more arts experiences this month! I searched the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com, and here’s what I’m looking at this weekend:

Capital University hosts its annual NOW MUSIC Festival through Saturday, Feb. 8. It features contemporary music and is completely free!

One of my favorite brunch spots, The Table in Short North, is featuring a new exhibition of stoneware sculptures by Richard Garriott-Stejskal through the end of March. It’s curated by (Not) Sheep Gallery. (And if you go for brunch, get the spicy Indian scrambled eggs!)

If you’re looking for date night ideas this month, Madlab’s resident improv troupe, Full Frontal Nudity, opens their annual Date Night show this Thursday, Feb. 6 and runs through Feb. 22. The performance is based on the best and worst romantic stories shared by audience members.

Fresh A.I.R. Gallery downtown just opened a new photography exhibition from Ohio artists Phil Adams and Matthew Ashton. The free exhibition runs through March 6.

OSU Theatre performs a play called Red Velvet Feb. 6-15, about the first African-American actor playing Shakespeare’s Othello in 1833.

I love Michael Bush’s work, and he has a new free show called The Silence of Snow running now through the end of March at the Schumacher Gallery.

We’re overdue for a visit to Franklin Park Conservatory, and they just put their full collection of Chihuly on display for the first time in a decade. To get the full effect of the illuminated glasswork, I’d suggest timing a visit for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, when the Conservatory is open until 9 p.m.

I’m always amazed, too, at all the live music available across the city, from concerts at the Summit Music Hall and the Blue Velvet Room to Natalie’s Grandview and Combustion Brewery. There’s something every night of the week!

Whatever we get up this weekend, we’ll share what we find using #artmakescbus. You can search the hashtag on social media for more great ideas.

Nick is Marketing, Communications, & Events Administrator for the Arts Council. He also leads culinary tours and blogs about breakfast at breakfastwithnick.com. Last weekend he and his family stayed in a treehouse in the woods.
