Weekend Warriors

Exploring mostly virtual events

I am very mindful of the spike in Coronavirus cases in Ohio. To that end, this weekend, I am going to mostly focus on events that are virtual, and I am going to start with shopping.

The holidays are coming and more than ever I want to support local makers. Virtual art fairs make this easy and safe and I found two on columbusmakesart.com.

I don’t normally shop this early, but with shipping times and 2020 being what it’s been, I think I’ll just get those orders in.

While searching for other events, I was happy to find a nice variety of virtual events to enjoy—in my own home, no mask, with my favorite bartender.

Music: Columbus Symphony continues its Beethoven 250 Cycle with Symphony N. 6 on Nov. 20.

Dance: Hixon Dance presents Entanglement, Nov. 20-23. This is a free, virtual performance from 2018, but donations will help ensure we see Hixon Dance again, live, when we get through this pandemic. And, The Wild Within, a dance concert inspired by Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, is presented online by Otterbein University’s Dance & Theater department, Nov. 19-Nov. 22.

Theater: The Abbey Theater of Dublin presents Go to Coda Nov. 20-29.

Film presented by the Wexner Center for the Arts: Fundi: The Story of Ella Baker, available through Nov. 26. This documentary offers an introduction to the life and contributions of Ella Bake who was a foundational figure in the American Civil Rights movement. And, Flag Wars, available through Dec. 3. Filmed in Columbus’ Olde Towne East in 2003, Flag wars is a personal account of urban gentrification and its effects on a community.

I said that I would focus mostly on virtual events this week. My one exception is Raggin’ On: The Art of Amina Brenda Lynn Robinson’s House and Journals, which opens at the Columbus Museum of Art on Nov. 20. I am so excited for this exhibition. I absolutely love Aminah’s work and with timed entry and masks, I feel pretty confident that I can socially distance and be safe.
