This week marks the official start of fall, so now I can unleash all things pumpkin-tasting and campfire-smelling and sweatshirt-wearing and hot-coffee-drinking and colorful-leaf-falling, right? Right?!
With the new season and the new week comes all sorts of arts adventures. I searched the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com and found out what’s new and what’s wrapping up this week!
This weekend is the third collaboration between three of our flagship organizations: Opera Columbus, BalletMet and the Columbus Symphony. Twisted 3 runs Sept. 26-29 at the Ohio Theatre, and will feature a delightful mix of music, opera and dance.
The other big event this weekend is Cartoons Crossroads Columbus (Sept. 25-29), a free series featuring cartoon storytellers, comic-makers and animators from all over the country. The speakers and workshops and exhibitions and sales are happening at multiple locations, so check the schedule to plan out your visit. My wife and I are taking our boys to see author Dav Pilkey at the Wexner Center Friday night. Pilkey is the author and illustrator behind books series like Captain Underpants and Dog Man, so he’s a bit of a personal hero for our boys.
Last week, Glass Axis opened their annual gallery of blown-glass pumpkins. I spied it out during Columbus Open Studio & Stage a couple weekends ago. Every year I’m blown away (get it?!) by the beauty and the range of pumpkins.
Thiossane West African Dance Institute performs at new show hosted by the Ohio State Department of Dance Sept. 26-29 at Sullivant Hall.
As we’re in the last week of the month, a lot of events are wrapping up. So don’t miss…
- Larry Hamill’s stunning paintings at the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery (through Sept. 27)
- Evolution Theatre Company’s Cabaret (through Sept. 28)
- Available Light Theatre’s Dance Nation (through Sept. 28)
- In a New Light and Greater Columbus 2019 at the Columbus Museum of Art (through Sept. 29)
- Brandt-Roberts Galleries’ CCAD Grads in Galleries exhibition (through Sept. 29)
- The last few days of Rhapsody & Refrain: 30 Columbus Poets at Streetlight Guild (through Sept. 30)
Happy Autumn, my friends! In between sipping pumpkin spice lattes and watching the leaves fall, be sure to tag your arts discoveries on social media with #artmakescbus.
