I need a little art therapy this week. Life happens and sometimes the best thing I can do is engage in the arts to get my heart right. So, naturally I headed to ColumbusMakesArt.com to see what’s going on, and per usual, I was not disappointed. Scrawl (formerly known as Urban Scrawl and one of my favorite events) is this weekend along with free concerts, new exhibitions, the Columbus Black International Film Festival, and classic movies in a classic theater.
- This week’s CAPA summer movie series offerings in the gorgeous Ohio Theatre include: To Have and Have Not, with Bogie & Bacall, Thursday, Aug. 26; The Defiant Ones, Friday Aug. 27; Cartoon Capers, Saturday, Aug 28; and Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, Aug. 28 & 29.
- Thursday, Aug. 26, Popgun is performing a free concert at the Columbus Commons.
- Red Herring Productions opens The Children, Thursday, Aug. 26. It runs through Sept. 10.
- The Dawes Arboretum recently opened Ribbit the Exhibition, which features 24 whimsical frog sculptures on view through Sept. 8—l love anything that combines art and nature.
- Columbus College of Art & Design also recently opened an exhibition of work by Bianca Beck, Tamara Gonzales, Christina Forrer.
- Friday, Aug. 27, artist talk at the Columbus Museum of Art with Nina Katchadourian.
- Opening night for the Columbus Black International Film Festival is Friday, Aug. 27 at the Wexner Center for the Arts.
- Scrawl 15, one of my favorite events is back Aug. 28 & 29! I am looking forward to heading to Franklinton for live painting, music and merriment.
- Dublin Arts Council’s Sunday’s at Scioto concert features Turn it Up Aug. 29.
This is my RX for the weekend, but you can make your own list at ColumbusMakesArt.com. Stay tuned, because next week we kick off our Columbus Makes Art Passport program. This is a free booklet with more than 60 arts stops listed (many free some not) where you can go and get your passport “stamped.” The stamps are actually stickers designed by Columbus-based artists, so that’s fun, and you can redeem your stamped passport for prizes—even funner. This all goes down Sept. 1 –Oct. 1. Get more info at ColumbusMakesArt.com/Passport. As of the writing of this blog, you can pick up passports now at The the Columbus Metropolitan Library (main branch in the library store), Columbus Museum of Art, COSI, Franklin Park Conservatory, Gateway Film Center and of course the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
Lacey Luce is a digital marketing specialist for the Greater Columbus Arts Council who loves stickers.
