Glass Pumpkins, A Little Gershwin and Do the Time Warp

Here we are at mid-October already, which means we’re only a couple weeks out before the end of the Columbus Makes Art Passport. If you’ve assembled enough stickers, start turning them in for prizes at columbusmakesart.com/passport/prizes. And I found plenty more opportunities to collect more stickers this week:

  • Franklin Park Conservatory opens its Glass Pumpkin Patch today, Oct. 13, and runs it through Oct. 31. Great way to support local artists and celebrate all things pumpkin!
  • The McConnell Arts Center hosts two Passport events this week. Thursday, Oct. 14 is the opening of a group exhibition from the Ohio Plein Air Society, and Friday, Oct. 15 they welcome the band FLIPPO performing a Steely Dan tribute. Get tickets for that through the MAC’s website.
  • Friday night, Oct. 15, Natalie’s in Grandview hosts the Robert Mason Trio for a free concert.
  • That same evening, Hammond Harkins Galleries hosts the opening reception for its latest exhibition, Still Is Still Moving, featuring Janice Lessman-Moss and Carol Stewart.
  • Let’s do the Time Warp again! The Short North Stage opens its annual production of The Rocky Horror Show this Friday, Oct. 15. Catch it through Halloween.
  • The Wexner Center welcomes Pakistani-born, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Arooj Aftab at the Mershon Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 16.
  • Also on Saturday, Hayley Gallery in New Albany hosts a reception for its latest exhibition featuring Robert Coomer.
  • On Sunday, Oct. 17, the Westerville Symphony performs the first concert in its Masterworks Series at Cowan Hall at Otterbein University.

And there’s plenty more events outside passport program:

  • ReelAbilities Film Festival streams The World Is Bright for free Oct. 13-17.
  • Jazz Arts Group is back with a concert featuring Gershwin, Berlin & Beyond at the Southern Theatre, Oct. 14-17. They’re welcoming saxophonist Patrick Bartley, Jr. and jazz vocalist Lena Seikaly.
  • 3060 Gallery hosts its monthly Saturday Art Brunch on Oct. 16, featuring live jazz, local artists and the Explorers Club food truck (get their fried egg tacos, if they have them!).

There’s a collection of events all over the city, this week and next, celebrating the release of Coloration: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World written by nationally renowned author and Columbus native Wil Haygood. See all of the events at columbusmakesart.com/Haygood. Here are some highlights:

Nick is marketing, communications, & events administrator for the Arts Council. He’s also a food/travel writer penning works for Columbus Monthly, Ohio.org, Ohio Magazine, Experience Columbus and on his own site breakfastwithnick.com. This time next week he’ll be looking at the ocean.
