Leaping for Joy over the Arts

I love that we get a Leap Day this year! To celebrate, we’re headed to the Grandview Theatre for a Leap Day party that includes viewing the 30 Rock Leap Day episode.

But that also means an extra day (okay, but not really) to enjoy the arts. Here are my highlights for the week:

  • The Ohio State Department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts opens a production of the play Silent Sky today, Wednesday, Feb. 28. Silent Sky explores the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. It runs through March 8 at the new theater building.
  • From Feb. 28 to March 4, the Wexner Center hosts its annual film festival Cinema Revival. They’re hosting a free reception on Saturday, March 2, or you can check their page on ColumbusMakesArt.com for the full film listings.
  • On Thursday, Feb. 29, Angela Perley plays a free show at the Upper Arlington Public Library.
  • That night is also the preview performance for Skeleton Crew, the latest production from The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio. It follows the story of four auto factory workers in Detroit. The full production runs through March 17.
  • CCAD also celebrates the opening of the Beeler Gallery’s three newest exhibitions on Thursday. During the free opening reception you can enjoy an open mic hosted by TRANSIT ARTS and led by DJ BHB.
  • On Friday, March 1, the Cultural Arts Center opens two new exhibitions: The Pen Friends’ Flying Adventures in the main gallery and Your Own Creative Voice in the loft gallery. The opening reception and the exhibitions themselves are free.
  • Friday and Saturday, March 1-2, Opera Columbus and the Columbus Symphony bring Eugene Onegin to the Columbus stage for the first time ever.
  • The new month also brings Fuse Factory’s Frequency Fridays, featuring a collection of electronic musicians at Old First Presbyterian Church in Olde Towne East. Tickets are $9.25 in advance, $10 at the door.
  • Friday night Natalie’s hosts a concert called Bright Night 2024. It’s a fundraiser for St. Stephen’s Community House, which supports the community through youth camps, senior programs, food pantries and more.
  • Finally, Saturday, March 2 is Gallery Hop in the Short North. You can see new exhibitions like Mary Chamberlain’s work at Sharon Weiss Gallery.
