Weekend Warriors

Start 2020 with the Arts

The first full week of the year always leaves me feeling breathless. Even coming off a fun (and believe it or not, occasionally relaxing) holiday, the beginning of the year arrives so suddenly. Our boys go back to school, I’m back in the office, all those projects to which I said “That can wait until the new year” are suddenly rearing their heads.

But I love a good bit of momentum, and I appreciate the refreshing start the new year brings. I’m ready for new adventures, and judging by the full calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com, Columbus arts organizations aren’t missing a beat. Take a look at what’s happening just this week!

  • On Thursday evening, the Streetlight Guild opens a new show curated by Richard Duarte Brown and featuring the work of Smoky Brown. I’m hoping to stop by the reception on Thursday, Jan. 9. Otherwise it’s on view every Saturday through Feb. 1.
  • That same day, Columbus Civic Theater opens a fascinating new production called The Girlhood of Shakespeare’s Heroines: five monologues offering new perspectives on some of Shakespeare’s female characters.
  • Shadowbox Live also opens their newest show, All Funked Up, on Jan. 9. It runs through Jan. 26.
  • This week the Dublin Arts Council opens a new exhibition, emerging, featuring student artwork. This free show runs through Feb. 21!
  • The Wexner Center for the Arts screens the film Varda By Agnes Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11.
  • The Columbus Symphony performs the first part of their Russian Winter Festival Jan. 10-12, focusing on works from Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky.
  • And if you want more Tchaikovsky, ProMusica is performing his Violin Concerto on Saturday and Sunday evenings, Jan. 11-12.
  • I love that Actors’ Theatre stays so productive during the winter months. In addition to their Shakespeare Underground performances, they’re producing the play OR by Liz Duffy Adams, a farce in the style of Restoration-era comedies. It opens this Friday, Jan. 10 and runs through the 26th at Madlab Theatre.
  • And this Friday, Jan. 10, CATCO opens a new children’s production of Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat.

Happy 2020! Here’s hoping that you get to incorporate the arts into your year. Use #artmakescbus on social media to share what you discover!
