Start May With the Arts

As we’re wrapping up April and welcoming May, I’m excited to see so much happening in the Columbus arts scene. I searched through the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com, and here’s a sampling of what I found:

  • The OhioDance 2021 Festival – a Greater Columbus Arts Council project support grantee – returns virtually this Friday to Sunday, April 30 to May 2, with a full roster of performances, classes, demonstrations and lectures. You can learn more about local dancer and choreographer Mansee Singhi in this City Pulse Columbus interview. She’ll be performing Saturday evening, May 1, at 7 p.m.
  • CATCO rounds out their season with a virtual production of Working: A Musical, which you can view from April 29 – May 9.
  • The Columbus Symphony performs Waltzes and Royal Hunts at the Ohio Theatre, April 30 and May 1.
  • The Columbus Jazz Orchestra performs swinging hits from the Great American Songbook, both virtually and with limited in-person seats at the Southern Theatre, opening April 30 and running through May 9.
  • Franklin Park Conservatory opened an in-person exhibition of local glass artists, called Glass Resurgence, open through May 31.
  • ROY G BIV, another project support grantee, enters the final week for its in-person exhibition featuring Aimee Wissman, Annie Chrissy Burley and Tyler Davis.
  • The New Albany Symphony Orchestra performs two in-person concerts this weekend. On Saturday, May 1 is a sensory friendly performance, Songs About Ohio, while Sunday, May 2 brings Songs From the Heartland (which is also livestreamed).
  • This Saturday, May 1 brings both Gallery Hop and the Hilltop Art Hop.

Because it’s the end of the month, a lot of events are wrapping up, too. All of these end after April 30:

Nick is marketing, communications, & events administrator for the Arts Council. He’s also a food/travel writer penning works for Columbus Monthly, Ohio.org, Ohio Magazine, Experience Columbus and on his own site breakfastwithnick.com. Wishing you a pre-emptive “May the Fourth be with you!”
