Weekend Warriors

This one’s for the film lovers

This week’s Weekend Warriors is dedicated to all of the cinephiles out there. Jan. 28 kicks off Sundance week in Columbus, which is one of 33 satellite sites for the festival in the United States.

Sundance Film Festival Columbus Satellite Jan, 28-Feb. 3 at Gateway Film Center. Due to the pandemic, seating is limited so I recommend getting your tickets and reserving your seats ASAP. It is also worth noting that Gateway has taken many steps to create a safe viewing environment. They detail everything on their website.

Unorthodocs Shorts, a festival of creative nonfiction shorts, streaming via the Wexner Center for the Arts through Jan. 28.

Art Unites Cbus film screenings: On Jan. 30, during Sundance week, the Gateway Film Center will premier three short films from winners of the Art Unites Cbus film and photography awards: Sterling Carter, Cristyn Steward and Donte Woods-Spikes. After the screenings, which start at 3 p.m., there is pre-filmed Q&A with the filmmakers hosted by John Daugherty, film commissioner & director of Columbus Film. This event is free but you must register and reserve your space as it is a live event and seating is limited to ensure social distancing (and of course masks are mandatory).

Spanning the gap between live theater and film, there is live theater shared virtually. CATCO launches their New Works Festival on Jan. 30, with George and the Hidden Dragon by Ashley Cambers. True to its name, the festival includes works that are new and invites the viewers to share in the play development process.

Red Herring Theater is presenting, virtually, A Better and Nobler Man, a timely political play written by Sheldon Gleisser. This production is currently being offered as video on demand.

Two virtual musical performances, happening Saturday, Jan. 30, caught my eye. Sara Kate Morgan live on the dulcimer and Six Strings Concerts presents Carrie Newcomer.

Finally, Capital University has a new exhibition, Danny Lyon: Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement and some of the Art Unites Cbus murals are on display. This is an in-person arts experience, so social distancing and masks are required.

Of course there are even more arts offerings (for movie buffs and beyond) to be found on ColumbusMakesArt.com.
