Travel tips for touring the arts in Cbus

I have family coming into town from Colorado and California. I work in the arts so it is important that I represent well and have a list of weekend arts offerings at the ready.

I also want to keep filling up my Columbus Makes Arts Passport; fortunately there are so many passport stops that coming up with a packed itinerary is easy.

The Luces are funny folk with a love for good music, so I’m thinking Shadowbox Live is a good place to start. Leather & Lace has a Thursday, Sept. 23 showing.

Friday the uncles want to go to lunch. I am going to push for lunch at the Columbus Museum of Art. Not only do I love dining in their sculpture garden, but we are nearing the end of the Aminah Robinson exhibition (last day Oct. 3), Raggin’ On: The Art of Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson’s House and Journals and I need to see it at least one more time. Also, a friend recommended The Father of Flying Calabashes (Le Pere Des Calebasses Volantes): Select Works by Bamazi Talle—and this is a friend whose recommendations I trust.

Afterwards we can walk over to Columbus College of Art & Design. They have three amazing shows up right now, but I’d really like to show the uncles the #artunitescbus BLM murals and talk about the importance of last year’s protests and the art that came out of them.

Then we can go check out the Pearl Market, which goes from 10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, along Gay Street near Pearl Alley. They almost always have live music and my inside source tells me Doug Hare is playing, which means l’m likely to hear a Beatles cover. I love a Beatles cover.

I can also recommend The Art of Lance Johnson at Streetlight Guild. This has to be scheduled. They are setting up 30 minute appointments to see the show. The brilliant thing about this is that you actually get time with the artwork without distraction. I went last week, and it was such a treat to view the work without feeling rushed. And this work deserves one’s time and full attention.

Robert Mason Trio is at Natalie’s Friday, Sept. 24. Good music, good food, good drink—hitting all of the Luce sweet spots.

For my dance loving relatives, Seek/Find by CoMo Dance Company is 8 p.m. Friday & Saturday at the Columbus Performing Arts Center.

The Luces are also a coffee-loving people—big time. So, the Columbus Coffee Festival is a MUST. And because poetry, music and coffee are besties, of course there will be music and live poetry readings at the festival.

As I write this the forecast looks good for the weekend, and there are small, growing humans to please. For them I am going to recommend the Franklin Park Conservatory. It is a great way to make the most of perfect fall weather and there is something for everyone—personally I’d like to check out the Resilience in Nature exhibition.

We can wrap up Sunday, Sept. 26 with Sundays at the Scioto, where Dulahan will play at 5 p.m. at the Scioto Park Amphitheater.

There. I’m prepared. Let the west side Luces descend! You can make your own arts tour plans at ColumbusMakesArt. Find events that are also passport stops here. Share your Columbus Makes Art Passport adventures with #artspassport.
