Weekend Warriors

Virtual Concerts, Movies, Improv, Exhibitions This Weekend

As of this week we’re one month in to quarantine. So, how are we all doing? Although Ohio hasn’t officially declared it, we’re planning for our kids NOT to return to school this year. It’s funny to think back on mid-March. That feels like a lifetime ago.

But we’re still adapting and finding things to do. I love that we’re seeing more and more virtual events and classes on ColumbusMakesArt.com/Virtual. There are enough streaming concerts, movies, virtual art exhibitions and writing classes to keep us busy all week.

Here’s what I found:

  • The Wexner Center is streaming several different films throughout the month. Catch Bacurau, The Hottest August and Sorry We Missed You by Apr. 16.
  • Last week the Highline Coffee Art Space launched a virtual exhibition of Staci Friedman’s watercolor work. View it through Apr. 30.
  • On Thursday, Apr. 16, Jazz Arts Group hosts the next edition of its Offstage LIVE series starting at 6:30 p.m. JAG’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, Zach Compston, will chat with Abhik Mazumder, Devin Coons, Jailynn Lake-Noel and Miles Smith – all alumni of the Columbus Youth Jazz program.
  • Friday evening (Apr. 17) at 8 p.m., you can kick back with Amber Knicole and Walter K of MojoFlo as they stream another live show on the AW Duo Facebook page
  • The Nest Theatre has begun livestreaming improv and sketch comedy. We’ve loved their Anonymous shows in particular, where they build scenes from audience members’ secrets. Catch their latest Anonymous livestream this Friday, Apr. 17 starting at 8 p.m.
  • On Friday and Saturday, Apr. 17-18, the Columbus Symphony will rebroadcast its concert featuring the famous 200-year-old “Il Canone” violin.
  • If you need some writing inspiration, the Thurber House has put great classes online. This Saturday, Apr. 18 from 1-4 p.m., you can attend Go Rogue! Write with Reckless Abandon, a workshop led by Katherine Matthews.
  • Again on Saturday, Apr. 18 at 8 p.m., Bearthoven and the Johnstone Fund for New Music host a live-streamed concert on their respective Facebook pages
  • Angela Perley will livestream a concert with Chris Connor on Sunday, Apr. 19 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Facebook and Instagram

Looking to get outside? Search the public art database to plot a route that takes you past murals, sculptures and other public art installations!

And don’t forget you can support local artists by donating to the Emergency Relief for Artists fund.
