Weekend Warriors

Live Theater, Poetry and a Pair of Requiems

This week I’m finally feeling back to normal after traveling overseas to Scotland. We didn’t think the jet lag would hit us so hard, since there’s only a four-hour time difference, but my goodness, it’s funny and frightening how it can knock you off schedule.

But now we feel recovered and ready for action. I’m looking ahead to this weekend and all the fun we can discover. A quick search of the ColumbusMakesArt.com calendar reveals no shortage of arts events.

Duke Ellington is one of my favorite jazz composers, and tonight – March 27 – Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza hosts a tribute night to him called Such Sweet Thunder.

I’m fascinated by this one-night exhibition called DISPLAYced: The New American Fingerprint at Trism near Ohio State’s campus. It features the work of refugee and immigrant artists in Columbus, and raises funds for Columbus Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS) and Us Together. This weekend the King Arts Complex also opens a new exhibition called Ohio Black Masters, featuring the work of African and African American artists living in Ohio.

Columbus theater companies are very active this spring, and a lot of shows have been getting great reviews. I’m looking forward to Available Light Theatre’s newest production, This, by Melissa James Gibson, which opens this Thursday, March 28. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday (March 29-31) are the final performances of Imagine Productions’ How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Oddly enough, I’ve never seen this comedy musical!

I see some fun spoken word, poetry and jazz performances coming this week, too. The Vanderelli Room hosts Fools for Hip Hop this Saturday, March 30, with family friendly live performances. Friday night, March 29, The Jazz Poetry Ensemble hosts their own March Madness-themed night of poetry performances at Dick’s Den.

If we’re in a more somber mood this weekend, there are two classical requiems being performed. The Columbus Symphony is playing Mozart’s Requiem March 29-30 at the Ohio Theatre, while the Central Ohio Symphony performs Verdi’s Requiem on Sunday, March 31 at Ohio Wesleyan’s Gray Chapel.

Whatever you see this weekend, tag it with #artmakescbus to share your discoveries!
