Belmont Building
Built in 1885, The Belmont Building was once home to the Belmont Casket Company which was renowned for making the “Cadillac of Caskets”. The company also gained popularity because it was the closest casket manufacturer for people in the west.
This area was also home to the Columbus Buggy Company. By 1900, the Columbus Buggy Company employed 800 people, as well as war hero and native son Eddie Rickenbacker, a mechanic and test driver.
Columbus was home to nearly 2 dozen buggy manufacturers, earning the reputation “Buggy Capital of the World” not only because of the number of companies, but because the National Road stopped here and travelers needed a buggy to continue west.
Today, the site houses The Buggyworks, a contemporary development of housing lofts, condominiums and offices behind Huntington Park. The Belmont Block also boasts loft office space which preserved the historic features of the original building.
