Alpha Hospital, Café on Long
Built in 1920, the Alpha building, located on the site of Cafe on Long … was the first black hospital in Columbus. Dr. W. A. Method built the Alpha Hospital which provided its services from 1920 to 1923 when black physicians were not allowed to practice in white hospitals. When the hospital closed, Dr. Method converted it into the commercial building that still stands today. Dr. Method served as the Medical Director for the Supreme Life and Casualty Company, was a part of many progressive civic and race movements, and is featured in a mural by artist Jeff Abraxas just to the west of Café on Long. The mural next to it features jazz greats Billie Holiday, Dizzie Gillespie, and Duke Ellington
