Old Hubbard School
A noteworthy landmark along this walk is the Hubbard Avenue School which continuously served as an elementary school from 1895 to 2009. Eclectic in design, the building exhibits several architectural styles which were popular for public buildings. With its convex roof, the central tower is reminiscent of the French Second Empire style, and the pediments which flank the recessed entry may have been a device to suggest that the structure was composed of several smaller pavilions. Much of the classical detailing on the building, including the denticulated cornice, the paired pilasters and the half elliptical windows in the pediments, also shows Georgian Revival influences. Additionally, the school wall features a bright children’s mural along Wilbur Avenue.
