Deliver Black Dreams: Write it. Paint it. Do it.
Artists Shelbi Harris and Marcus William Billingsley collaborated to create a design that represented what "Deliver Black Dreams" meant to them. The phrase is based on a quote by Faith Ringold and a desire to empower kids today with an affirmation that supports them being able to see themselves in a future full of possibility. This mural is the second created as part of the Deliver Black Dreams aspirational campaign OF, BY and FOR Black people. Black Lives Matter is the foundation for the movement but Delivering Black Dreams is about imagining a future where Black people and those who love them are free to choose their destiny free from oppression. Deliver Black Dreams will be a multifaceted community campaign designed to employ Black artists to create public art, encourage mentorship of young people and new artists, and develop community partnerships that can have an impact in not just the cultural sector but ultimately the education, health and economic sectors as well. The concept of Deliver Black Dreams was developed by artist Marshall Shorts and materials, outreach and logistics are being developed by a working group of Black artists and Maroon Arts Group, a Black led Columbus cultural organization. The first phase of the campaign is based in visual expression and will employ Black artists to create public art and encourage mentorship of young people and new artists around the central narrative of “Deliver Black Dreams” in three to six large-scale murals over the course of two to three years. The first murals were completed in the Milo Grogan District in Nov. 2020 on Fifth Ave near Cleveland Ave. and in July 2021 on the Hilltop on Wilson Rd. just south of Fisher.
