Celebration for a Champion
A memorial for legendary track athlete and OSU alumnus Jesse Owens. The sculpture consists of vertical triangular planes that form a pyramidal silhouette. A walkway bisects the grouping, allowing the viewer to walk in the midst of Owens' accomplishments. The four points of the pyramid represent his gold medals from the 1936 Olympic Games and the four world records he broke at a Big Ten meet in 1935. The frame of a triangle on the north side of the group represents a hurdle. The lattice on the west side represents his climb to success and the struggles he faced.
