John Ross Callahan, 1853-1918, was a noted dental practitioner and researcher who developed root canal therapy. The sculpture, designed as a bust, sits on a three-tier pedestal base. Callahan is portrayed in a suit, vest, and tie. The sculpture is located in a secluded courtyard on the south side of Postle Hall, The Ohio State University Dental School at Hamilton Hall before being placed at its current location

"Erected to the Memory of Dr. John R. Callahan By the members of the dental profession in appreciation of his untimely devotion to the cause of Dental Research, Dedicated by the OSU Dental Society December 1922"
