This statue of a soldier, titled The Spirit of '98, commemorates the men who fought in the Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection, and the China Relief Expedition (1898-1920). This memorial marks the shift from “hero worship” to a more egalitarian and inclusive understanding of our past conflicts.
