Nine Events Curated for a Great Weekend

You can find all kinds of arts events in Columbus, but his weekend music fans in particular have a TON of options. I’m just going to highlight a few, but head to columbusmakesart.com and do a date search to see what all is available this weekend.

  • The first event that caught my eye was The OG Plyers doing a free “happening hour” show at Natalie’s, Thursday, Feb. 22. I saw them at the Columbus Arts Festival and love them, which is no surprise as two of the OG Players are in Mistar Anderson—and I am a FAN.
  • Thursday also brings Helen Sung Quartet to the Lincoln Theatre courtesy of Jazz Arts Group. Tickets are $28.57.
  • Columbus Cultural Orchestra has three stops on their Black History pop-up concert tour, Friday, Feb. 23 they play at the Boys & Girls Club of Columbus; Saturday, Feb. 24 in the Columbus Warming Center on Main Street; and Sunday, Feb. 25 at the Columbus Museum of Art. All performances are free.
  • This weekend (Friday & Saturday) the Columbus Symphony welcomes guest conductor Carl St. Clair and pianist Claire Huangci as they perform Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Ohio Theatre. On Friday at 10 a.m. you can catch the dress rehearsal for $14 and they will have coffee and donuts. Regular tickets range from $30.50-$78.50
  • Chamber Music Columbus brings Isidore String Quartet to the Southern Theatre Saturday. Tickets range from $35.34 to $46.67.
  • Friday and Saturday you can enjoy music, dancing, film, community and check out the newly renovated Historic Pythian Theater with Artist Commune at the Maroon: Ode to Hip-Hop. Friday includes DJ O Sharp, dancing, and even a 101 DJing lesson. Saturday has more music, a hip-hop documentary and an album release. All of this is free.
  • While I don’t read a lot of poetry (I’m more of a mystery/urban fantasy kinda girl) I love hearing it read live. Thursday, at the Wexner Center for the Arts, not only can you hear poetry read live, but you can see a film about a slam poetry team out of New York going to a National Poetry Slam—Slamnation. General admission is $9 with special pricing for members, seniors and students.
  • In theater news, Gallery Players opens The Producers at the Jewish Community Center, Saturday. Tickets range from $25-$30 and the show runs through March 10.
  • On Sunday Columbus-based, nationally acclaimed author and lovely human Maggie Smith is doing a free reading at the Bexley Public Library.

This is what sang out to me for the weekend, but obviously this is just the foam on the latte. Head to the events calendar at columbusarts.com for the full cup.

The Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus Symphony, Jazz Arts Group, Lincoln Theatre and Wexner Center for the Arts are funded in part by a Greater Columbus Arts Council Operating Support grant. Maroon Arts Group is supported in part by a GCAC General Support grant. Chamber Music Columbus, Gallery Players at the Columbus Jewish Center is supported in part by a GCAC Project Support Grant. Columbus Cultural Orchestra is the recipient of a GCAC Thrive Grant.
