Weekend Warriors is about getting out into the city to experience all the arts have to offer, however in a rare switch I’m going to kick off this week’s post with a recommendation to watch TV. This Thursday (Feb. 28) RuPaul’s Drag Race premiers its 11th season, which will feature Columbus’ own Queen Nina West.
Of course, in this day and age we are not tethered to a show’s scheduled airing, so we can have our RuPaul/Nina fix and still get out into the world. Here are 11 picks for the weekend.
- Shadowbox Live opened Leather & Lace last week and the musical tribute to the women of rock is getting some great buzz.
- Also premiering last week: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids: Mythic Creatures at COSI. Pro tip: tickets to this exhibition, in the American Museum of Natural History Special Exhibition Gallery, sold out last Saturday, so maybe order early.
- Paisha Thomas & Friends: The Dream perform Feb. 28 at Natalie’s Coal Fired Pizza.
- Jazz Arts Welcomes the Ellis Marsalis Trio, Feb. 28 at the Lincoln Theatre.
- CATCO opens Babe the Sheep Pig, March 1 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center.
- The Columbus Symphony’s Masterwork Series continues this weekend, (March 1 & 2) at the Palace Theatre, with Spanish Flamenco Festival, which includes performances by Columbus-based flamenco star Griset Damas Roche.
- March 1-3, BalletMet presents the timeless Don Quixote at the Ohio Theatre.
- The Wexner Center presents The Making of Raiders of the Lost Ark March 2.
- 934 Gallery is opening A Mobius Strip on the Sand March 1 and will have an artists’ talk for the show on March 2.
- And, March Gallery Hop is, of course, on Saturday—keep an eye out for my favorite Gallery Hop singer, KaTanya Ingram!
These are just a handful of things that caught my interest. You’ll find plenty more arts events to explore at ColumbusMakesArt.com. Show us what you explore with #artmakescbus.
