Drawing / Installation / Painting

Drawing is central to my art.  My parents were both architects and as a kid I would visit construction sites with them, seeing first hand how one of mom's sketches on tracing paper would come into a grandiose physical reality.  The idea of drawing, the profound way it can open up an idea, and for example be blown up in scale, redrawn, placed in a computer program, and become something else, is the foundation for my art process.

The series of work presented here, all under the title Vata, comes from an Ayurvedic term meaning 'air and space'.  It is both a literal depiction of much of the work's subject matter--of cloudscapes, a night sky, the 'empty' space of the paper, and of my own personal journey in creating this series.  In the past year during the making of Vata, I was living not only in Vancouver, British Columbia and Portland Oregon, but also spent some time in Manila Philippines.  There are 2 series of work, the smaller graphite drawings which were created while I was literally traveling around Asia; and the larger cloudscape works rendered in charcoal and pencil at my home studio.  With reference points drawn from personal photographs and also collaged from several sources like the Internet, books, and magazines, these larger scale works transcend the polarities of figuration and abstraction, placing the micro and macro side by side.

An Ayurvedic term for 'air and space', Vata is a meditation on both the far-reaching possibilities and the intimacy of drawing.  Presented by City Center Gallery, Vata is an exhibition of graphite and charcoal drawings by local artist Jill Raymundo.  Multiple drawings series comprise the exhibition, ranging from intricate, textural collage drawings of commonplace objects to large-scale cloudscapes based on images taken from an airplane window.
