Steven Elbert
Visual Arts
Throughout my working career, I have been involved in artistic pursuits that are highly specialized, but frequently overlap.
As an architect I have often worked in the mediums of pencil, ink and watercolor to delineate designs and buildings. As a photographer I have used the camera to record architecture and express myself artistically. As an artist I have created paintings, prints and drawings that focus on artistic goals. The work shown in this portfolio is primarily painting in watercolor, reflecting my interest in Architecture, Figures, Botanicals and Still Life.
In recent work I have created a series of watercolors that intentionally emulate photography, and at first glance could be mistaken for camera work. Even though drawn meticulously by hand in pencil, they are painted in shades of grey, simulating the appearance of black and white photography. Based on photographic images, the paintings are adjusted and altered for specific effects.
