"The functional vessel is often overlooked on a day-to-day basis. How often do you stop to think about the objects that you use everyday? How does the handle feel as you hold your coffee mug? Do you hold it with your entire hand or just two fingers? Does the lip of the cup allow the coffee to flow smoothly as you take a sip? When you finish a bowl of cereal, is the bottom of the bowl visually appealing? Is the texture of the bowl inviting to the touch?
Wheel-thrown vessels become a blank 3-dimensional canvas that I carve into in search of symmetry, repetition, rhythm, texture and balance, paying close attention to the evolving relationship between the surface and form. Imagery gleaned from my observation of minute details and textures found in everyday objects, fruits, vegetables, flowers and plants, are reduced to an abstracted vocabulary. I hope that my work will evoke a sense of both familiarity and curiosity in the viewer, while asking for a deeper appreciation of the handmade object when used in day to day life."
