Artist’s Bio
Mixed media and digital painter West Hardin-Leeth is interested in the natural world and its landscapes as a way of connecting with and expressing the inner spirit. West’s landscapes are formed through an intuitive painting process that is influenced by his shamanic and meditation practices. He focuses on a feeling or experience allowing the image to develop in layers of watercolor, ink, acrylic, and dry media.
West’s painting “Rising Mist” is in the 5th annual Members-Only Virtual Art Exhibit with the International Society of Experimental Artists. 2019 is the third year that West has received grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council for Resources and Professional Development.
West received his degree in illustration from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, in Denver, Colorado. He is originally from Ionia, Michigan and has lived in New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Kentucky. West has made Columbus, Ohio his home and has lived here for over 12 years creating a beautiful home and garden with his spouse in Merion Village.
Artist Statement
My paintings are inspired by the inner worlds of my dreams, meditations, shamanic practices, and the natural world. I’m interested in capturing the atmosphere of these worlds that are often mysterious, peaceful, serene, and ethereal.
The paintings are made with watercolor, acrylic, ink, and various dry media on paper and mounted to panels. The paintings evolve through layering these different media and allowing the imagined landscape to reveal itself to me in an intuitive process.
I want the viewer to connect with these unseen worlds in their own way perhaps even to their own inner worlds and experience the spirit and wonder of these places.
