Heather Boyer

Drawing / Painting

I guess my artist statement is like any other.  You know the old story: you start working as a bookkeeper, then you go to college for a Journalism degree, and then --

Wait.  Well, I guess that's not really the normal route, is it?

Yet here I am: a self-taught award-winning gallery-exhibited watercolor artist, with the communication strengths of a journalist and the practical organization of a bookkeeper.

I started painting with watercolor in 2014 - in the most painful season of my life, I turned to creativity, and during my darkest days I painted brightly-colored flowers.  And as I have grown as an artist,  I realize I gravitate consistently toward four values in the art I create, collect and promote: anything that shows beauty, reveals meaning, chooses optimism, and builds community.  I simply can't get enough of it (for proof, you should see all the pieces that wallpaper my bedroom walls).

For fine art, I'm known best for my watercolor florals; I'm less well known for my nerd art, in particular goofy cat-themed Star Wars doodles.

I'm also currently a member artist of 3060 Artworks Gallery.

OUTSIDERS SHOW @ THE VANDERELLI ROOM
Saturday, March 9th - Friday, April 15th
(218 McDowell St, Columbus, OH 43215)

The most vulnerable piece I've ever made is on display this month in the most meaningful show that I've ever been a part of.  The Outsiders show, curated by local watercolor artist Amanda Kisielewski, is an excellent group gallery show exhibiting a variety of mental illnesses and struggles.  So if you're curious about how I chose to paint my recent divorce, or  - much more importantly - if you are interested in the conversation and visualization of mental health and the difficulties around it, please make sure you take a moment to view this powerful collection.
