One of my most vivid early memories was looking up at the leaf canopy of a large maple on a warm summer day.   The warm green glow as sunlight filtered through the leaves overhead infused me with joy at its vibrance. How colors shift and change has led me to investigate the complimentary relationships that are created out of darkness and light. As colors are pushed forward and back, fascinating combinations are created, transporting the viewer into a mysteriously familiar world. A Professor I had at OSU, Syd Chafetz, said that art was taking the ordinary and showing it in an extraordinary way. This has influenced how I relay my vision in my paintings.   One day while in my kitchen I observed a view from my back door at an angle I hadn’t been aware of before. It brought the rooftops of neighboring houses into view in a different way, creating a pattern I found very interesting. As I kept studying this view from different angles I found myself thinking how interesting these rooftops would look if it snowed with the light and shadows playing off the different shapes and the subsequent colors that light might cast. I studied the view once we got the snowfall I had hoped for, taking in the way the light shifted throughout the day until I found that moment I had been envisioning. I then took a series of photographs and began to work. By simplifying the scene and maneuvering the composition, I was able to bring emphasis to what my mind’s eye was envisioning. I completed a series of of these rooftop paintings in different weather conditions and in different ways while exploring the possibilities of how watercolor could be used and combining them to express what I sense through the use of light, shape and shadow.

Whether at home or traveling, something has to resonate deep within to move me to express my inner vision in paint, whether with oils or watercolor or other mediums.

My family spent much of our free time exploring Southern Ohio. We observed the birds, their various calls as well as the local flora and fauna throughout the seasons. I would wake up in that in-between time when night becomes the day, having the privilege of watching the mist rise up from our pond in the early morning and seeing it fade away as the sun rose over the hill into our little hollow.

My painting has been influenced by these explorations with nuances between the hidden and the seen as well as the textures and forms of nature around me. I find myself drawn to the ordinary everyday things in my life looking to discover it with fresh eyes.
