Weekend Warriors

Seven arts & culture events to love

As I expected, when I searched for events this weekend at ColumbusMakesArt.com, I saw a lot of great options for those who enjoy Valentine’s Day, for example, Friday, Feb. 14, you could take your significant other to St. James Tavern for their Ninth Annual Valentine’s Day Shorts Festival (in this case the shorts are live plays).

Me, I’ve never really been a Valentine’s Day kinda girl. I am, however, a huge fan of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, so of course I am excited for BalletMet’s world premier of Edwaard Liang’s Alice, Feb. 14 at the Ohio Theatre. And I have to give extra love to BalletMet for teasing me via Insta with the delicious costumes that have been worked up for this show. It only runs through Feb. 16 so don’t be late.

You know what’s better than sappy greeting cards? Belly laughs! Enter Opera Columbus and The Barber of Seville, running Feb. 14-16 at the Southern Theatre. Opera Columbus is having some fun with this comedy. They’ve moved the setting to Seville, Florida in the 1990s, and they are running a glitter beard contest. Glitter. Beard.

Of course if you are really set on something more Valentine’s Day traditional, how about dinner and a show? Specifically the Doc Robinson Valentine’s Day Show at Natalie’s Grandview Feb. 13 & 14.

A few other events on my radar:

COSI recently opened DC Super Heroes: Discover your Superpowers, it runs through May 25. I’m curious to see how many my favorite DC heroines (and anti-heroines) are included.

Roy G. Biv is opening a new exhibition, Transtemporal Reaction, with a reception on Feb. 14 (perhaps dinner and a visual arts show?)

And, finally All Arts Day: A Celebration of Aminah Robinson, at the King Arts Complex, Feb. 15.

These are my picks for the weekend, but you can find plenty more at ColumbusMakesArt.com—including plenty of Valentine’s Day date-night options. Share the arts and culture love at #artsmakescbus.
