Don’t know about you, but I’m loving this weather! It gets me excited to get out and get active. There’s so much happening in the Columbus; here’s just a smattering of what I found on ColumbusMakesArt.com:
This is a big week for Columbus theater!
- This Thursday, Sept. 21, The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio kicks off its season with POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive. The title and description alone sound hilarious; I can’t wait to see this one! Catch it through Oct. 8.
- That evening Evolution Theatre opens its latest production, too: Tony Award-winner The Inheritance Part 2. It’s performed through Sept. 30 at the Abbey Theater of Dublin.
- This weekend, Sept. 22-24, the Theatre Reset Short Play Festival features eight short plays, performed at a space in Harrison West.
- And on Friday, Sept. 22, Columbus Children’s Theatre starts its season with the musical Ragtime.
- Two Scoops Performance Art produces a dramatization of the book Dancing in My Tattered Pink Dress at Columbus Dance Theatre, Sept. 23-24.
- If you need a good laugh, consider getting tickets for Nest Theatre’s ComedySportz improv show on Saturday, Sept. 23. It’s good for kids down to 10. We took our boys last month and we LOVED it.
In other performing arts:
- Wexner Center residency artist Tere O’Connor performs Rivulets, Sept. 21-23.
- Tronee Threat performs Finally Made It Part 4 Friday, Sept. 22 at McConnell Arts Center. He uses music and storytelling to document his self-improvement journey while incarcerated.
- Also on Friday night you can gather at Genoa Park to see Little Amal, a 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee. She’s trekking across the county this fall. Her Columbus stop features a celebration with music, food, dance and a performance from poet Sara Abou Rashed.
Plenty of live music this week, too!
- The Worthington Chamber Orchestra features An Evening with Mozart on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the McConnell Arts Center and Saturday, Sept. 23 at St. Mary Catholic Church.
- That same night, Jazz Arts Group offers a free concert called The Beat Goes On at the Columbus Metropolitan Library reading room. The event is free but registration is required.
- The Columbus Symphony performs Holst’s The Planets Sept. 22-24.
- The next Sundays at Scioto concert series in Dublin features North to Nashville this Sunday, Sept. 24.
And a few more events that stood out to me:
- The Bexley Latinx & Hispanic Heritage Festival is Friday, Sept. 22.
- This week the Urban Arts Space opened Embroidered Past, Imagined Future, an exhibition introducing the work of Lucie Kamuswekera from the eastern Congo.
- And Upper Arlington Cultural Arts opens Walking Among Angels, featuring the work of fashion designer and printmaker Eliana Saari.
Columbus Children’s Theatre, Columbus Symphony, The Contemporary Theatre of Ohio, Jazz Arts Group and Wexner Center for the Arts receive Operating Support grants from GCAC, while Music at St. Mary Concert Series is a Project Support recipient.
