Last week I was out west visiting one of my brothers in Livingston, Montana. It’s a cool little town surrounded by mountains with great food, beer, history and art. We spent a little time visiting some of the small arts centers and museums, all with an eclectic mix of exhibitions and performances. My brother’s photography will actually be featured at Katabatic Brewing at the end of this month!
But now I’m back in Columbus, and I’m looking for arts closer to home. Here’s what I’ve found on ColumbusMakesArt.com for this week:
- This week the OSU Department of Theatre, Film and Media Artists performs Lorca’s Blood Wedding – one of the first productions in their new building! It runs through Friday, Nov. 17.
- The Urban Arts Space also opened a new exhibition this week titled Mimesis, featuring artist-in-residence Arris’ J. Cohen. Find it at the Hale Black Cultural Center on Ohio State’s campus through Dec. 14.
- Cover to Cover bookstore hosts authors Rhondda Roumani and Autumn Allen in conversation on Thursday, Nov. 16. It’s free and family friendly.
- It’s a busy week at the Lincoln theatre! Thursday evening its hosts the North Star concert featuring B.Slade and other music ensembles. (Get to know Jermaine Smith, who will be performing that night.) Friday is the next Backstage at the Lincoln with Jordidge, Saturday morning the Jasmine Spitzer Quintet plays the next PBJ & Jazz series, and Saturday evening the Thiossane Institute hosts An Evening of African Elegance.
- On Friday and Saturday the Columbus Symphony performs Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony at the Ohio Theatre.
- On Saturday the 18th Franklin Park Conservatory opens its holiday shows, Conservatory Aglow and Holiday Blooms.
- Also that evening, the Columbus Museum of Art opens its annual Lego exhibition, Think Outside the Brick.
- Saturday evening the Streetlight Guild hosts poet Bluz for a performance and open mic night. Tickets are only $10 at the door!
- Finally, on Sunday, Nov. 19 you can experience Native American flute from musician Mark Camden for free at the Westerville Public Library.
Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Franklin Park Conservatory, Jazz Arts Group and Lincoln Theatre Association receive Operating Support grants from GCAC, while the Thiossane Institute receives Project Support.
