Recommendations for a fantastic weekend

I am super excited for the weekend and so with no further ado, I am going to jump right into my recommendations for your arts adventures.

  • It is time for one of my favorite annual events—Scrawl. It’s kind of like a two-day block party in Franklinton (Oct. 14-15) but centered around dozens of live painters. I highly recommend it. Admission is free, but there will be art, food, merchandise and adult beverages on sale and you can support the event with your purchase.
  • Also in Franklinton, at Wild Goose Creative, Friday, Oct. 13, is the opening reception for El Futuro/The Future’, which showcases works by local Latino artists, exploring their diverse heritage. The show runs through Nov. 2.
  • Oct. 13 also brings us the start of BalletMet’s new season with On Stage, which unites three spectacular works, Twyla Tharp's Nine Sinatra Songs, Justin Peck's The Times Are Racing, and Ulysses Dove's masterpiece Vespers, for a night of American choreographic innovation. The show runs through Oct. 21 at the Davidson Theatre in the Riffe Center. Tickets range from $36.50-$99.50
  • Friday the 13th is the perfect night for 934 Gallery to host a Weird Movie Night, featuring Nicholas Cage in Vampire’s Kiss. It’s free and outdoors so bundle accordingly.
  • If you haven’t experienced the brilliance that is The Columbus Cultural Orchestra, then I have good news for you. Head to The Citadel Saturday, Oct. 14 and catch The Celebration of a New Moon concert with music by the Classical Crossover Crew. Tickets are $23.14.
  • Also on Saturday, Chamber Music Columbus is bringing the ensemble Meta4 to the Southern Theatre. Tickets range between $36.50-$45-67.
  • And, because having choices is a good thing, Saturday is the 100th monthly show for It's All Been Done Radio Hour. The show is at Boxland, will have a meet-the-cast gathering after the show and tickets are $10.

Final thought: there is a lot of great music to catch in Columbus on any given weekend. For the purposes of this blog I tend to focus on local (either local bands or locally, owned indie venues). BUT today I am going off the rails. Every once in a while I spot a band name that is so brilliant (and new to me) that I have to give them a mention (and look them up on Spotify). So, with that in mind, I give you Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. They are playing at A&R Music Bar Oct. 15 and tickets are $20.

Of course, these are just a few of the arts happenings in Columbus this weekend. Go explore the events section of ColumbusMakesArt.com to find more.
