It’s the start of my favorite month! October is the heart of fall, when we get chilly nights, pumpkins turn ripe, and bourbon and dark beer become my beverages of choice.
It’s also the start of new arts adventures. The calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com are chock full of arts experiences, from theater and dance performances to community block parties to fall exhibitions. Here’s what I found:
- On Wednesday, Oct. 4, check out a free screening of Being in a Place: A Portrait of Margret Tait, part of the Wexner Center’s student-led Cineseries.
- The Ohio State Faculty Club always features a terrific lineup of exhibitions. The latest one, Strokes of Color by Janet Grissom, opens this week and runs through Dec. 15. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and is always free.
- Six String Concerts hosts Craig Carothers and Annie Mosher on Friday, Oct. 6 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center.
- 934 Gallery opens its October exhibition on Friday, Oct. 6. It features the work of Dillon Beck, Adam Elkins and Dane Khy.
- This weekend, Oct. 6-8, Columbus Dance Theatre brings back its popular show Dancers Making Dances.
- Lots of great ways to experience glass artwork this week! Glass Axis opens its annual Glass Pumpkin Patch on Friday, Oct. 6, and this Saturday, Oct. 7 is the next Chihuly Nights at Franklin Park Conservatory.
- ProMusica opens its season with Beethoven & Bruch Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7-8, at the Southern Theatre.
- The final Sundays at Scioto concert is this Sunday, Oct. 8 featuring British Invasion.
There are some great community events this weekend, too:
- On Friday, Oct. 6, CCAD hosts a community block party with interactive art, music, food and drink. It’s free but RSVPs are suggested.
- Head to the University District on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7-8, for The Pearl Alley Jam, with live mural painting, music and art vendors.
- And Day of the Dead Columbus takes place this Saturday, Oct. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Green Lawn Cemetery.
It’s another big week for theater in Columbus!
- The national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar runs at the Ohio Theatre through Sunday, Oct. 8.
- Available Light Theatre opens its latest production, What the Constitution Means to Me, on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Riffe Center.
- The Short North Stage opens its annual production of The Rocky Horror Show this Thursday, Oct. 5. Be sure to catch it through Oct. 29.
- On Friday, Oct. 6, Eclipse Theatre Company opens its very relevant production of Admissions, about a prep school admissions administrator.
Franklin Park Conservatory, ProMusica, Short North Stage and Wexner Center for the Arts receive Operating Support grants from GCAC, while 934 Gallery, Available Light Theatre, Columbus Dance Theatre and Six String Concerts are General Support recipients. Latino Arts for Humanity (producer of Day of the Dead Columbus) and University District Organization receive Project Support.
