Explore Live Theater, Classical Music, Functional Glass Art and More in the Arts This Weekend

To be honest, this time of year I have an overwhelming urge to hibernate. The arts are something that can pull me out of my den and remind me that I am human, not bear. This week I share seven events that are calling me out of my slumber.

  • Pay what you can for live theater Thursday and Friday with a preview showing of The Worries of Wesley (Or: How I Learned to Stop Having Anxiety, or Not Really, But I Am Trying), presented by Contemporary Theatre of Ohio, which opens this week in the Riffe Center Studio Two space. The regularly priced opening performance is Saturday Jan. 27 and runs through Feb. 11, tickets range from $14.29-$23.81.
  • Live theater is also in the Studio One Space at the Riffe Center. Opening Thursday is Fairview by Jackie Sibblies Drury resented by Available Light Theatre. Tickets are $26.
  • Enjoy a classical music experience with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra’s Naked Classics: Hayden & Prokofiev at the Southern Theatre Friday Jan. 26. General admission tickets for adults are $28 plus fees.
  • ProMusica is also hosting 15-year-old violinist Fiona Khuong-Huu on Saturday and Sunday at the Southern Theatre. Virtuosic Violin tickets start at $18.
  • Watch and listen as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I is scored with a live orchestra (The Columbus Symphony) at the Ohio Theatre Friday and Saturday. Tickets range from $50.50-$125.50 depending on seating.
  • See Bharatanatyam dance in the margam format (and learn what that is, if like me you are not familiar) when Sophia Salingaros performs at the McConnell Arts Center Saturday. Admission is free.
  • If you are a fan of art that is also functional, check out the recently opened Pipe Show at Glass Axis. The show opened last week and runs through Feb. 29. There will be a gallery reception with artists in attendance on Feb. 9. Admission is free.

As always you can find even more events to entice you out of the winter sleepies at ColumbusMakesArt.com.
